FAMILY PORTRAITS: The Surprising Link to Confidence & Belonging in Children

Memory Lane

When I was a kid, I remember visiting my Granny often.  I looked forward to many things about that visit, but I loved exploring the “formal” living room.  This is where Granny displayed her family pictures.  There were frames of images taken long ago when my mom was little.  I loved seeing my Granny in pictures with her children.  She always added to the frames, so every cousin had an updated school portrait or family portrait.  It was kinda like my way of taking attendance.  These are my people.  Seeing my picture among them always made me feel loved.

The Sense of Belonging

Children have an incredible knack for associating things we put on display with significance. If you’ve ever experienced the excitement of your child wanting to show you their artwork and eagerly waiting to see if it makes the fridge display, you know what I’m talking about. These displays are their way of telling us, “Look, this is important to me, and I want you to see it!”

In a similar vein, when we proudly display images of our children and family throughout our homes, we’re sending a powerful message to our little ones. We’re saying, “You are cherished, you are loved, and you BELONG.”

But why does this matter so much? Well, it turns out that when a child feels a strong sense of belonging and significance, it can have a profound impact on their development and well-being.

Key Reasons

  1. Security: Children who grow up in an environment where family photos are displayed are more likely to feel secure. They see their place in the family and know they’re an essential part of a loving unit. This sense of security can help reduce anxiety and fear, providing a solid foundation for their emotional well-being.
  2. Confidence: When children see their smiling faces on the wall or their family photos showcased with pride, it boosts their self-esteem. They internalize the message that they are important, which, in turn, fosters confidence and a positive self-image.
  3. Encouragement: Displaying family photos reinforces the idea that family bonds are essential. It encourages open communication, empathy, and emotional support. When children feel valued and loved, they are more likely to express themselves and seek guidance and comfort from their parents and siblings.

My Family Story

Honestly, seeing my family portraits makes me smile every time I pass them in my home.  I want the same for you.  I love looking at my FAMILY PORTRAITS and seeing the changes throughout the years.  Now that my child is a teenager, I can tell you this is even more important. I cherish those memories.  Her little dimples.  Her beautiful smile.  Her leaning in to give me a squeeze. I even keep the grumpy pictures. Those moments are a part of the story too.

So, how can you incorporate the power of family photos into your home?

  1. Create a family photo wall: Designate a space in your home to display your favorite family photos. This could be in the living room, hallway, or any area where your family gathers. Choose frames and arrangements that reflect your style and make it an evolving gallery that grows with your family.
  2. Display a beautifully made custom Photo Album.  Albums are great ways to tell the story of your family.
  3. Rotate and update: Don’t forget to update your family photos regularly. Children grow and change, and so should your display. Ensure that your family photos reflect your family’s current dynamics and milestones.
